A Gift from Cat

Are you comfortable in public speaking? Most people are not, and this is why Cat Wilson does something special. For the past eight years, Cat has gone into elementary schools to teach young children the gift of voice. She takes children from 5th and 6th grade, 10 and 11-year-old children, and teaches them how to overcome the fear of speaking.

Cat sets aside eight weeks of her time for this pro-bono program once a year. For eight weeks, once a week for an hour a week, she goes into the classroom and gives a training program to help kids gain confidence in speaking. At the end of that time, she puts them on television (cable access) where they run a 1-hour show, demonstrating their speaking skills. The kids are awesome! They then watch themselves on tv. Many of them are approached by their friends and other children who say, "I saw you on tv!" This is a lifetime experience that anchors in success!!!

You can see some photos of the kids from this year's program at Elmonica Elementary School in Beaverton, Oregon by clicking at the link at the top of this page (under "Program"). Bill Newham is a photographer that volunteered his skills and talents to providing a photo album for the kids and families to reflect back on the experience.

The program with these children was directed and produced by Cat Wilson, Dick Carpenter and Doug Weir through the facilities of TVTV (Tualatin Valley Television) cable access. This station has shown the program, and you can request more showings by contacting the studio and asking for David J. Renshaw, Operations/Programming Coordinator at (503) 629-8534 ext. 124.

How can you become a part of raising this confidence in children? Several of Cat's colleagues and clients became a part of this program by contributing towards the costs of the program and production. She invites interested businesses and individuals to contact her in regards to her program "A Voice for Kids" by sending an e-mail or calling her at (503)525-0595.

Cat is currently writing a book detailing the process and the classroom experience called A Voice for Kids. She plans to make this available for teachers and interested individuals who would like to emulate her program in 2005.

The next "Voice for Kids" program (8-week-training) begins in January of 2006. If you are interested in learning more about this program, and working with children in this pro-bono process, call Cat.

Wouldn't we all live a different life if we could gain the confidence in sharing our voice? You never know how far a child can go when they have an experience in seeing themself succeed. Let's all contribute to raising the confidence of people.
