COMPASSIONATE
COMMUNICATION & MAKING PERSONAL CHOICES
| LIVING
IN A COMPASSIONATE RELATIONSHIP IS GOOD |
- Do you
avoid conflict?
- Do circumstances
leave you feeling powerless?
- Do you
ever feel victimized by others?
- Are you
tired of feeling dead and just going through the motions?
Think back to the last time
someone criticized you or you felt unappreciated. How many
of these responses seem true for you?
- Shouting at the person, then
getting up and leaving.
- Interrupting to argue before
hearing them out.
- Treating their comment as
a joke.
- Shifting the conversation
to reasons why you are right.
- Blaming someone else.
- Replied that they had an ulterior,
hostile motive.
- Quietly seethed, without saying
anything.
This is a cycle of fear and projection
... one that can destroy relationships among colleagues, friends,
family and loving partners.
Our needs are at the roots of
our feelings. When we can express our needs appropriately
without making demands, they are perceived as requests. The
only way to stop a vicious cycle of violent communication
is to tell yourself that you'll listen and tell your truth.
And... how is this done?
Unlearn the "fear of
speaking out for your needs."
